Veldman Zonwering, Dune House, Terschelling, NL

Terschelling

The island of Terschelling  is an independent municipality belonging to the province of Friesland. You can go on excursions with a covered wagon or boat, go block carting, walk across the mudflats and, go hiking or cycling.

Here a holiday home has been fitted with unique louvers. By Sunshield, commissioned by Veldman Zonwering in Heerenveen (NL). The home has been rebuilt to a design by Jort Spanjer architect.

Above the double door in the north facade is a skylight window. A louver system of 4 by 2.5 meters has been installed here. The system at the window facing west is slightly smaller.

Both louver systems start at the base as a rectangle. The larger one transforms into a triangular shape after a meter. The small one already after half a meter. Both extend to the ridge of the overhang.

The owner of the home has opted for the 96-E louver. This is a blade with a width of 96 millimetres. When the louvers are completely open, the view between the louvers is 9 centimetres.

Because of the supply of salt air, the aluminium components are provided with a seaside coating, so that the coating is better resistant to the influence of salty sea air.

A seaside coating starts with a pre-treatment of the aluminium that is more aggressive than usual. The aluminium is then coated, the slats often a second time.

The aluminium parts are coated in RAL 9004. Due to the gloss level of 30%, the signal black colour has a matt appearance. The plastic parts, such as the clips that hold the slats, are black.
